4. IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT THAT YOU ARE FAT!

When I was younger and very much fatter, there were many times when I told my friends that I put on weight very easily, they would give me a “it is your own fault” look and start lecturing me on what to eat and what not to eat. The comment would be like, eat more vegetables and less meat, and blah blah blah. Fortunately for me, I have a very strong evidence in term of this matter, which is my elder brother, Frankie.

Frankie is 3 years my elder, the only brother I have, who has a superb metabolism, when compared to me. He never grows fat, despite how much he eats, until he was in his thirties. Even when he puts on weight, as I can see, it was like very gradually over the few years that he was really over eating almost on a daily basis, and as I estimated, based on his current weight, like 1 to 2 kgs per year. You see, we grew up playing, eating and doing almost any other things together. I eat what he eats, and most of the time, he will have the bigger part of the share, because he is the elder one. And most of the time when we bet and challenged to certain games, and the stake is sometimes food or snacks, he mostly won. So I dare to say firmly if anyone ask me, that he is confirmed a bigger eater than me. We were often named as Wang Sar and Ye Feng, the 2 very popular comedians in Hong Kong and Singapore back in the 70’s, who are, one being thin and tall, and the other, fat and short. And guess what, I was Ye Feng.

Because of this belief, whenever I meet someone who is thin, I like to ask them how and what they eat. And they were many times when I showed envy on the way and type of food that they can eat and still maintain their very beautiful weight, and start to share with them how little I can eat, I got that kind of “ it is your own fault” look again. A lot of them, who don’t know me well, will ask me it is that I eat too much and don’t exercise. And when I tell them the amount of time I spent on exercise, it shuts them up a bit.

From 2003 up till last year before my injury, I was playing badminton for 2-3 hour, 2 times a week, and basketball for 2-3 hours every Sunday morning. Not enough? Guess what I do for a living, I am a mover! Although I don’t really do moves everyday, my work is still, mostly physically. Having mentioned that, I also like to stress that I think exercise has really very little effect for those with slow metabolism. I say this because the time when I put on the most and fastest weight was when I started my moving business back in 2000. Under quoting for most of my jobs, I was working like a dog and skipping meals, surviving on only isotonic water for some of the bad and unlucky days. All I needed was 2 - 3 bottles of 100 plus, plus some quick snack like curry puff or 1-2 buns, to put on weight, despite the 10-12 hours hard and labourious work. Can you belief that? I can go for hours explaining what I believe, but probably only those who have the same problem will understand and belief what I am trying to explain.

I am not encourage any one reading this chapter to give up hope on losing weight, despite the strong belief that some people are born to be fat producing machine. I am just stressing that I believe the number one reason that someone is fat is genetic or hereditary. Culture may be in second place, and follow by illnesses. Poor eating habits, overeating and lack of exercise may just be in the fourth or fifth position.

So, should we just sit back and watch our body grow till its maximum, since it is just our “bad luck”? Of course not!! Just like if you are born in a poor family (like me), will you let your children suffer the same destiny? I, personally, won’t allow that kind of thinking, despite that there is no guarantee that I will die being a rich man or slim man.

3. How to lose weight by changing the way you breathe?

Warm up

  • Using your nose, breathe in as much as you can, till the air fills up your belly.
  • Breathe in slowly in the beginning, but harder when you are about to stop.
  • Shape your lips as if you are whistling, then slowly exhale through your mouth.
  • When you feel that the air is almost out, blow 3 times with force.
  • Repeat till you feel more comfortable then go to the next step.

After warming up

  • Using your nose, breathe in as much as you can, till the air fills up your belly.
  • breathe in slowly in the beginning, but harder when you are about to stop.
  • Hold it there for as long as you can
  • Shape your lips as if you are whistling, then slowly exhale through your month.
  • When you feel that your air is almost out, blow 3 times with force.
  • Hold it there as long as you can.
  • Repeat as often as you can remember, while you are reading, watching television, in a bus, waiting for someone, as long the air around you is clean.

2. What inspired me to write this blog

I have been overweight since my primary school years and have been battling with my weight problem since my teenage years. I have read hundreds of books, thousands of articles, tried many different slimming products, spent more than 10 thousands dollars, spent so much time and energy, but only to gain mostly experiences that have slow or no effect on me. Although some of the methods I tried do have some faster effects, they were either too expensive, or bring nasty side effects like panicking hunger pang, giddiness, injuries, gastric pain and even at one time, depression and nervous break down. To make matters worse, I have a kind of arthritis named Ankylosing Spondilities that needed treatments and medications, as according to my doctor, for the rest of my life. Therefore I have to share my left over income between my chronic illness that leads to many other illnesses, and my overweight problem. I have to struggle even more on my finances when my elder son, Brandon, who was born in year 2000. A few months after he was born, I think partly because of the stress coping with a new born baby, I was diagnosed for having high blood pressure, and also, high cholesterol, which I have to be put on, the highest doses of medications, as according to the hospital's pharmacist, which again, for the rest of my life. This was the worst time of my life so far, having to cope with even more side effects, of one which makes me couldn’t think clearly and feeling sleepy and tired all the time, or sometimes, insomnia. I am self-employed, so this, indirectly affects my income too. There were so many times when I couldn’t sleep, I look at my son Brandon, and worry whether I will be able to live till the day when he is independent. I have so many times told my wife, if I were to someday die of a heart attack, to sell our flat in Singapore and go back to her hometown in Malaysia, where both the standard of living, and cost of health care, is less expensive.

The year 2002, Jan, was the year that I decided to really do something to my own health, but have to compromise with my income. I gained the support of my working partner, George, to let me just take care of the indoor and paper work whereas he has to take care of the field jobs, which demand more physical works. I believe he saw that I was very sick and needed treatment, at that period of time. So after that time, when I was working mostly from home, I took all my spare time to rethink, what went wrong with me, other than being so unlucky? Why is it so difficult to lose weight? What went wrong? Of all the books that I have read, I should be a master of weight losing. So what I did was, I spent more time reading, rethinking what are the mistakes that I have done, and created a plan that was easier to follow, and at the same time, to budget my weight loss plan since I have to make less in order to take care of my health. By the time in the mid of the year 2003, I have lost 20kgs. Not only that, I was able to maintain my lost weight quite comfortably with little side effects, and most important to me, with little cost. I have maintained my weight since then, but now going one step further to lose another 5kgs, this time not only for my weight and appearance, but for my arthritis, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I have maintained my blood pressure and high cholesterol reading since I have lost my 20kgs, but I was still on medication up till 2005 June, where I stopped taking them despite being warned by my doctor that I must continue to take them. I am now doing well without the medications. I have yet to research and find out whether I can also stop my medications for my arthritis.

My conclusion, of all the books that I have read and studied in details, I have concluded that health care, especially weight loss, can be done with very little cost. Therefore, I have decided to make it my life time commitment, to try to help, share and educate people with weight problem to get the proper knowledge, and not to spend any unnecessary money, BEFORE consuming any slimming products, or, engaging in any slimming activities or club, which may be expensive, and have slow or no effects.

I hope that I can have your support!

1. MISSION

  1. To form a weight loss support group, so as to educate the public to gain the correct knowledge before consuming or engaging into any, especially those expensive, weight loss products or programs which have slow or no effect.
  2. To form a weight loss club, so as to share weight loss cost. (Example will be to engage our own masseuse, acupuncturist, gym instructor or nutritionist. The residential area rate of massage session for an hour is about $40, with enough members; I estimate a savings of $20 an hour).
  3. To set up an internet forum, that do not allow any commercial advertisements, so as to share true weight loss experience, and not for testimonial with commercial benefits.
  4. To set up an internet forum, to exchange great ideas and true great deals, on weight loss and health matters.
  5. To have weekends weight loss camp and weekly courses, for those who find weight loss both physically and mentally challenging.
  6. To share and save weight loss cost by buying products or goods at genuinely wholesales price.
  7. To set up a rehabilitation center for those very overweight people who needs to lose weight quickly and safely, at low cost.
  8. To ultimately get the recognition of our government, to allow the public to use our CPF’s fund, for preventions and treatments of any diseases that may be cause by obesity, and also to be able to obtain SDF approval for courses related to health care matters.
